To start things off when I came into this class I knew what I was getting myself into, because I have taken Marlen’s class before.  I was scared when the class started, because we had a lot of things to do and I felt that I didn’t have enough time to get all of my work done in my other classes and this class.  My anxiety level increased as the research process began for our research papers.  my anxiety level also increased when I couldn’t figure out my research topic and when I was trying to get my research question down.  The first half of the semester was the hardest for me, because we had a lot of work to do for this class.  Somewhat before the middle of the semester I was thinking about dropping this class.  I am not one to quite at anything so I decided to stick it out.  My biggest worry is that I wouldn’t get my research paper done in time or have it be long enough i.e. 15 pages.

I feel that I turned my anxiety, fears into strengths when I got my work done and on time.  What also helped me was when I met with Marlen and Andrew for our conferences.  They really helped me calm down and they told me where I was in my research process.  I felt that if I was having trouble completing a part of my paper I could text Andrew at any time and he made me relax and feel more confident in my paper.  I feel that when Marlen broke up the papers it really calmed me down, because not everything was due at the same time.

My future goals as a researcher is to read the abstract of an article before I read the whole thing.  The abstract is a summary of the whole article.  When I read the abstract it makes me feel better as a researcher and it saves me some time, which I love.  As a writer I know what needs to be included in each part of my paper, just by doing the research.  I feel that after I completed the research I knew how to put my paper to gether and that made me a better writer.

I feel that my proudest moment in this course is when Marlen said “Sam you have a kick ass lit review.  That made me so happy and that comment gave me more motivation to complete my research paper and make it the best that I can make it.  I feel that the one thing that will stick with me for the rest of my life is that become a researcher you have to know what you are researching.  Another thing that will stick with me is how to cite an article, book, journal etc…

I feel that the assignment/document that was most useful during this research paper process is blog entry #9.  This entry is where we had to read two articles very carefully and summarize every paragraph.  I feel that it was really useful, because it showed me what my articles were about.  I felt that I had a better understanding of my research and my topic after completing that blog entry.  I have another assignment/document was when we had to do our annotated bibliography.  In this assignment we had to give a summary of what our research articles were about.  I feel that it was useful, because it helped me write my lit review and it should me what my articles were about.

I feel that the most useful feedback that I received at any stage of this research process was when I had my conferences with Marlen and Andrew.  The conferences helped me get great feedback, because it showed me where I was as a researcher and they helped me figure out something with my paper if I was stuck.  I feel that the peer reviews and the writing center gave great feedback, because I found out that some parts of my paper were repetitive.  With the peer review projects they gave great feedback by letting me know where I made mistakes and where I stand on my paper.

The most difficult part of this drafting process was just putting parts of my paper together.  It was difficult because I was not sure where to start or how to start.  Another part that was difficult for me was to write my story for the end of my research paper.  It was difficult because it was a very personal subject to touch upon.  There was really no easy part when drafting my paper.

I feel that my lit review shows my best ability as a writer, because I was told that it was good.  I also feel that it was my best section, because I really did my research on my papers and I compared them to each other.  I used all of my articles that I had to find for my research.

For the second peer review project I read Dani’s paper.  I feel that her paper was easier for me to read because we are doing the same type of genre.  If you want to see how I  graded her paper click below.

After completing the first peer review project I learned that I gave good transitions between each section.  I felt that after having a student read my paper that the student was able to edit my paper in some way that I couldn’t do with my own paper.  I learned that with my own paper that I need to include one source that I forgot to include and to reword a couple of sentences.  I learned that people write differently than me.  Since my paper is based on a personal experience my writing style was different then my partners writing.  I learned that once you edit someone elses paper you can see if you messed up in your own paper.  I kind of liked the project but I didn’t want to be to hard on my partner.  I am a nice person and I didn’t want to ruin his paper.  I also learned that you need to have an open mind on what your partners paper is about.  I know with my partner that I am not for what he is trying to accomplish so I really had to try to have an open mind.  I also learned in my paper that I gave a lot of good information and that I just need to fix a few things.

As I was reading the sites that Marlen gave us to read I found a few statements that I found was interesting to me as a reader.  In the results section I found some information that I found was relavent.  In the section titled What the Results Section Includes gives two facts that I feel are good to include in my results section.  They are statements of results and it gives a brief description of what that is.  The next section is explanatory text and that gives a brief description of what needs to be included.  I like the section labeled Organization.  It list two things that need to be included to keep your results section organized.  Then at the end of the page it gives a short example of a results section of a research paper.

The next thing I read was the results section of what he gave us to read.  In this article it gives a few things that I feel are important when writing my results section.  The article includes the function of your discussion paper.  It states that the function of the discussion is to interpret your results in light of what was already known about the subject of the investigation and to explain our new understanding of the problem after taking your results into consideration (bates.edu).  I like how the discussion will always connect to the introduction in some way.  I believe that it is true.  Then it list a few fundamental questions that could be included.  Next it list the style and the main important thing that it includes is to always us an active voice when possible.  Then it mentions the approach part and the writer needs organize the discussion to address the experiments.  Then it mentions that the writer must relate your work to the findings of other studies.  I feel that is very important in writing a discussion section.  Then the final part it talks about is that you can’t introduce new results in the discussion.

The final section of the sites that we had to read is about the conclusion part of our research paper. In this article I found a few things that are important in writing a conclusion.  In this section of the article it mentions that the conclusion is one of the hardest sections to write in a research paper.  I believe that it is true.  The conclusion is where you have a chance to say your last word about the subject.  Then it talks about what should be included in your conclusion section.  Next it mentions a few ideas to help you write your conclusion section.  It list a few strategies to write your conclusion.  Then it list strategies to avoid.  Finally in mentions four kinds of ineffective conclusions.

One article that I found only talks about how to write a results and discussion section.  In the results section it mentions what should and shouldn’t be included in a results paper.  The first section that it talks about is called writing a results section.  Right off of the bat it mentions what the most important thing is and it is You must clearly distinguish material that would normally be included in a research article from any raw data or other appendix material that would not be published (rice.edu).  Next it give a bullet list of the content of a results section.  Then it mentions what to avoid.  Then it mentions the style  of a results section.  Finally it gives a bullet list about figures and tables.

The next section of the article is about the discussions section of a research paper.  The first thing that it mentions is to interpret the data in the discussions in appropriate depth. Then it gives a bullet list for the content and the style of a discussion part of a paper.

The second article that I found talks about two different forms of writing a results section.  The article mentions about quantitative information and then qualitative information.  The article gives a definition on what quantitative information and qualitative information are.    Then it gives a brief description on what each type of information is about.

The next part of the article gives a brief description on what the discussion section should be about.  One thing that I noticed is that this section should be in present tense.  I wish that this section should be a little longer to give more detail in what should be included in this section of a research paper.

The next section is about the conclusion of a research paper.  In this section it mentions that the conclusion ties your research to your thesis statement.  It also binds all of the main ideas in your thinking and writing.  I wish that this section was longer so that it would tell me how to write this section but it gives some information on what the section should look like.

The last article that I found on how to write the last three sections of a research paper is very brief.  In the results section it just says answer the question “What did you find”.  In the discussions section is just says answer the question “What do these findings mean?” In the conclusion section it says answer the question “What do you conclude? What actions need to taken?”  I wish that this article would give more information on what these sections are about but that didn’t happen.

After I put my three sections of my research paper together I had to add a couple of transitions to the next section.  I had to take out my intro to my methods section since we don’t need one there. I created a cohesive reading experience by having transitions from one section to another.  I think that the section that needs to most work now is my methods section.  I need to do more research on what type of genre I am writing in.  I have a little bit of information on my genre, but not enough to get my point across.  I will be going to make my paper better and to give more information.  I will be heading to the writing center hopefully this week to get my paper edited and to improve my paper.  I will also be working on my discussion/ analysis and conclusion of this research paper.  I am on the right track with my research paper.

Blog entry #12- My Methods March 18, 2010

For my research paper I am doing an auteothnography.  My research subjects will be myself and my mother.  I am having our stories told at the end of my paper and some information throughout the paper.  There are no dangers to myself as being a participant, but there maybe some danger to my mom, because of her job if anyone reads my paper.  The research is mainly going to be about blaming the victims of the abuse.  The research will also be about my personal experience and my mothers.  My mom knew from the very beginning that I am going to include her story in my paper.  I will safeguard her identity by changing her name if she wants me to.  I might just leave her out of it and just pick a random person.  I will ask for her permission if I can keep her name in my paper.  At this moment I don’t have any questions about methods, because we went over them in class.  If I have any other questions I will ask them in class.

Blog entry #11 Method and Research design March 11, 2010

While I was reading the required material that we had to read for this blog entry which is called Writing up Research: Method and Research design, it gives a lot of good information on how to write a methods paper.  The article first starts off saying that the methods section answers two question which are: how was the data collected or generated and how was it analyzed.  Then under the purpose part of the article it gives some things that the methods paper should include.  Then in the next section which is called common problems, in this section it gives some things that are common problems when writing a methods paper.  Next the article talks about the overview of a methods paper.  In this section it mentions how the method fits into your thesis part of the paper.  In this section it gives the outline of your paper with the intro the whole way to your conclusion and it gives little descriptions of what they are.  Next the article gives some examples of different types of research.  It gives the definition on what each type of research is. For example, trend analysis is predicting or forecasting the future direction of events.  The final part of the article gives an example of a methods section of a research paper.  You can click on certain things in the example that will tell you what it should be and look like.  I felt that this section was the most important thing to know about a method section, because it gives an example on what your method section should look like.

The second article/document that I found is not as good as the first one but it gives some good information.  I got my information from How to Write and Introduction and Method sections.  To get to the information on the methods section you have to scroll down on the page.  The one thing that I consider to be important is that all methods sections should have three basic categories of information.  You need participants, materials, and procedure.  For each category it gives a brief description on what they are.  Then it gives an example of a methods section of a paper.  To me this site is not as good as the one that you made us read.  It gives some good information but it is really short compared to the article that you gave us to read.
